For Pupils
As with reading we want children to have a love of writing so that they can communicate effectively. The transcription skills (handwriting and spelling) are taught in all year groups. Once children have mastered the letter formation taught in RWI they will quickly move onto learning a cursive style ready to start joining their handwriting in Year 2 onwards.
Composition of their ideas into text types is taught through Pathways to Write: an excellent mastery approach to writing. The texts are linked in theme, to those they study in their reading lesson, further developing their vocabulary and understanding. The units capture the children’s imagination through a book which is explored in depth over a unit of work, providing many engaging opportunities to write in response to the text e.g. a letter to a character or a diary entry etc. Furthermore, entwined within this book study, children learn the relevant punctuation and grammar required for their writing and have many opportunities to practise it.
